Listen to the Radio: Podcasts

Listening to the radio is a great way to learn English. But do you sometimes want to pause and repeat to understand better? With podcasts, you can do this!

Podcasts are radio shows you can get on the internet. I’ll recommend three of my favorites, then show you where to find them.

My favorites

BBC 6 Minute English

This is a short podcast for English Language Learners. Each one is a discussion between two people, about an interesting topic.

Start with: Food and Mood.

The Moth

The Moth is all true stories about people’s lives. It’s sometimes very funny, and sometimes very sad!

Start with: “Joy” by Ashok Ramasubramanian

Up First

Up First is a news show from National Public Radio. They cover the top news stories every day. It’s only a ten minute show, so you can repeat it many times to understand everything.

Start with: “Saturday, April, 15th”

How to listen

There are two ways to listen: from a website, or from an app.

From a website (easier)
  • Click on the links above to go to the podcast’s website. Click “Play” or “Listen Now”
From an app (better)

If you “subscribe” to a podcast on an app, new episodes will be delivered to your phone every day.

On an iPhone:

  • Look for the Podcasts app on your phone:
  • Go to Search (bottom right) and type in the title of the podcast.
  • Select the podcast you want, then click “Subscribe”.
  • Check the app every day or every week for new episodes.

On an Android:

  • Download the app Stitcher:
  • Go to Search (top right) and type in the title of the podcast.
  • When you see your podcast, click on the three dots on the right.
  • Click Add to Playlist.
  • Check Favorites Playlist and Save.
  • Check the app every day or every week for new episodes.
