GRAMMAR GAME: Tricky Contractions!

Some contractions sound like other words. For example, “you’re” is confused with “your”. These two words sound alike, but have different meanings. Here’s how you can tell the difference!

HERE’S THE TRICK:

1). If you are using “your”, there should be a noun (person, place, thing or idea) after it. “Your” is used to describe something as belonging to you and is always followed by a noun.
2.) If you are using “you’re” in your sentence, replace “you’re” with “you are” and see if it still makes sense. If it doesn’t work, then you should probably use “your”. “You’re” is the contraction of “you are” and is often followed by a verb form ending in -ing.

Example:
You’re blouse is blue. WRONG
You are blouse is blue. WRONG
Your blouse is blue. CORRECT

IMMERSION TIP:

Listen and read how you’re and your are used. Can you spot when they are used correctly and incorrectly?
