    hey there
    it’s Eli
and today we’re gonna watch a couple of clips from How I Met Your Mother
    00:06
we’re gonna learn what it means
“to get stuck in a rut”
    00:09
and we’re gonna learn about how reading children’s stories can help you learn English
    00:14
but first a short clip from How I Met Your Mother
just to get you warmed up
    00:22
    we always go to McClaren’s
    yeah cuz MacLaren’s is fun
    00:27
    MacLaren’s is this much fun
    00:30
what I’m offering is the chance to have this much fun
    00:34
you say that you say it’s gonna be this much fun
    00:37
    but most of the time
    00:40
it ends up being this much fun
    00:44
    this much fun is good
    it’s safe
    it’s guaranteed
    00:47
this hand gesture thing doesn’t really
work on the phone, does it?
    00:51
    get in the cab Marshall

    01:09
    Ted Ted Ted
    right here
you keep going to the same bar
    you’re in a rut
    01:16
and I am a rut buster
I’m going to bust your rut
    01:22
    it’s routine
    01:26
let’s pause here for a minute and understand a key word, okay
    01:29
    the key word is rut
    what is a rut?
    01:36
well a rut originally is a little track in a road, okay?
    01:40
and if for example you are driving a car along a road
and it got stuck in a rut
    01:48
    this little trench
    01:52
if the wheel falls into it
then it can only just keep going in that same direction, right?
    01:56
so when you get stuck in a rut
    02:01
it means you make a habit out of something
    02:04
    you do something one way
and it’s hard for you to do it a different way
    02:10
so to get stuck in a rut
means to get stuck doing the same thing
    02:14
to get stuck in a routine
    okay?
    02:22
all right, let’s listen to that again:
    02:34
Ted Ted Ted right here you keep going to the same bar
    02:39
    you’re in a rut
    02:42
and I am a rut buster
    02:45
I’m going to bust your rut
    it’s routine– I like it
    02:52
what’s the first syllable in “rut-tine”
    02:58
