A debt collection letter is a threat that they may file a lawsuit against you. If you call and offer a settlement you might get a demand of 100% of what they claim and quite often you might not get a good deal
It is not a lawsuit and there is no obligation for you to respond.
A lawsuit starts with a summons. You can find information about where the courthouse is located and who the plaintiff is and the attorney representing the debt collector. If you receive this summons, you need to respond.
You have 30 days to file a formal response. Start counting the 30 days from the date it was delivered to you. A letter, phone call, or asking for more time is not an answer.
Remember to answer the complaint before appearing at any hearings or else the judge will not even speak to you.
